Plant Starter Use
Here’s a step-by-step guide to getting new seedlings started with your Vext’s plant starter. You’ll learn why and how to use the plant starter when you already have plants in your plant wall, plus what to expect next—so you can keep enjoying fresh, home-grown greens effortlessly.
Why Use the Plant Starter
When your plant wall is full of thriving greens, the extra nutrients in circulation can actually slow or block new seeds from sprouting. The plant starter gives young seeds their own water source, free from those higher nutrient levels, so they can get off to a strong start.
What You’ll Need
Your Vext plant starter insert
Clean water
New Vext pods of your choice
The Vext mobile app
Step 1: Fill the Plant Starter
Lift the plant starter out of your Vext.
Fill it with clean water up to (but not past) the fill-line mark.

Tip: This mark ensures the pods don't get too wet, which can stop them from germinating.
Step 2: Reinsert into the water tank lid
Place the plant starter back into it's hole in the water tank lid.
Step 3: Add Your Pods
Open the Vext app and add each pod to your virtual plant starter.
This keeps both you and Vext in sync on what’s growing where.
The app will nudge you about refilling water every 3–7 days.
Place your new Vext pods into the starter according to the layout in your virtual plant starter.
Step 4: Remove extra sprouts
Once the pod has several sprouts it is important to remove any additional sprouts so that you leave 1-3 sprouts left, depending on what type of plant you have.
Step 5: Watch for True Leaves
True leaves are the second set of leaves (beyond the tiny seed leaves) that show your seedling is ready for the plant wall.
They usually appear 7–20 days after planting, depending on whether you’re growing herbs, lettuce, or other greens.

Step 6: Add to Plant Wall
Now that your little sprout has developed true leaves, it’s time to give it more room—and nutrient rich fog! Follow these simple steps to transfer your Vext pod into the plant wall:
Remove the starter pod by gently pulling it out of the plant starter.
Free up a slot in the wall by removing a existing pod plug or Vext pod from a pod holder on the plant wall grid.
Insert your new pod by pressing the Vext pod into the now empty pod holder.
What if Nothing Sprouts?
It’s rare, but sometimes seeds don’t germinate. If after 21 days you see no sprouts:
Double-check water level in the starter, making sure the pods aren't soaked.
Let the pods dry out a little bit before refilling with water.
Try another Vext pod—sometimes the seeds just had a rough start!
Summary
Using the plant starter isolates new seeds from the nutrients that plants on your plant wall receive, giving them the perfect environment to sprout. In just a few easy steps—remove, fill, reinsert, and add pods—you’ll have your next harvest on it's way. Keep an eye out for true leaves at 7–20 days, and rely on your Vext app reminders to stay on track. Here’s to more effortless, healthy home-grown greens!
