Root Vegetables: How to Grow & Harvest
How to prune and harvest root vegetables like radishes. This guide explains when to thin root vegetable sprouts, how to support proper root development, and the best way to remove the plant from the pod holder for a clean and successful harvest.
How to Prune Root Vegetables
Thin to one plant per pod: Once multiple sprouts emerge, gently remove all but the strongest one.
Remove extra sprouts early: This ensures the remaining plant has enough space and nutrients to develop a full-sized, well-shaped root.
How to Harvest Root Vegetables
Harvest when roots are visible and full-sized: Look for the shoulders of the root emerging above the growing medium. Most are ready when they reach about 2–3 cm in diameter, how long it takes to reach that point varies between plants.
Remove the entire pod holder: Take the Vext pod holder out of the plant wall to make harvesting easier.
Work over a bin or sink: Some growing medium may fall out during harvesting, so position the pod accordingly.
Pull gently from the base: Hold the base of the plant and slowly pull the root vegetable out of the pod, supporting the pod to avoid damage.
Tip: Firm but gentle pressure will help you lift the root without damage.
With proper pruning and timely harvesting, your root vegetables will grow clean, crisp, and ready to enjoy.
Radish
The radishes will sprout in 7-21 days and you can harvest them within 30-45 days.
